Want a Secure alternative to Zoom ? Try Google Meet - PC and Mobile

Google Meet Crosses 50 Million Downloads on Play Store, Challenges Zoom.

What are the security issues with zoom?

In July 2019, a researcher disclosed a severe security issue in which Zoom opened up webcams to persistent spying and compromise; a bug that stayed in place even if the software was uninstalled due to a leftover local web server

With that popularity came Zoom's privacy risks extending rapidly to massive numbers of people. From built-in attention-tracking features to recent upticks in "Zoombombing" (in which uninvited attendees break in and disrupt meetings, often with hate-filled or pornographic content), the company's security practices have been drawing more attention -- along with at least three lawsuits.

Sending a warning call to Zoom, Google Meet has crossed 50 million downloads on Play Store, a massive 900 per cent increase in user base in a span of few weeks as people work from home in the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to data provided by AppBrain, Google's video conferencing tool garnered over five million downloads on Play Store in first week of March alone. Till May 17, it was downloaded by over 50 million times.

According to Javier Soltero Vice President & GM, G Suite, the tech giant has seen daily usage of Meet app grow by 30 times, with hosting 3 billion minutes of video meetings daily. "Last month (April), we were adding roughly 3 million new users every day. That's why we're expanding the offering to more people around the world," Soltero said this month.

Meet arrived within Gmail accounts globally including in India last week. Users can now start or join video conferencing right from their Gmail accounts and they do not need to download the app separately.

Days after Google made the Meet app free for everyone, it was downloaded over 50 million times on Google Play Store. Although Zoom had become one of the most popular video conferencing platforms, Google’s Meet is much easier to configure and more accessible than the other apps. Google recently made the app free and integrated it into Gmail.

As per an AppBrain report, Google Meet garnered over 5 million downloads on Play Store in the first week of March. As per the latest data retrieved by AppBrain, Google Meet was downloaded over 50 million times on the Play Store till May 17.

“We’ve re-engineered Google Meet, originally built for secure business meetings, to make it free and available to all. Since making Meet's advanced features free for all G Suite and G Suite for Education users in March, we've seen daily usage grow by 30x, with Meet hosting 3 billion minutes of video meetings daily. Last month, we were adding roughly 3 million new users every day. That's why we're expanding the offering to more people around the world,

“Javier Soltero Vice President & GM, G Suite had said in a blog post.
